Need help in finding the best culinary arts college.?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under community arts programs | 2 Comments »

My son is planning on attending a community college to do his basics or there is a small college nearby that has a good culinary arts program that he plans on attending, but I think that will only be a start. He wants to someday be a world renown chef so I’m wondering if anyone out here who has attended such a college can recommend one.
KMS: thanks, although i would love to keep my son in american i think he would prefer to study in europe, but again I’m not sure which would be the best.

My fiance is going to the Art Institute of Houston Culinary school. The Art Institute system is one of the best in country. Johnson & Wales and the Culinary Institue of America (CIA) are two of the absolute best and most prestigious in the country though. There are a few other very prestigious schools, but they don’t come to mind right now. Actually, I think that if your son wants to be a great world renowned chef that he go to Europe and train under the top chefs there. My fiance is working at a nice restaurant in Houston and he is working right alongside a guy that graduated from the Culinary Institute of America. That guy shelled out a lot more money to go to that school and yet he is still in the same exact position as my fiance. Both of them are managers in training and won’t even be cooking that often as managers. Sadly, that’s where the money is.

This is kind of long, and if you don’t want to read it, thanks for at least checking the question out!

I’m The webpage curator for an organization called Fwacham! FILM & THEATRE Production Company ( glhaljordan.tripod.com ), And our goal is to provide family and FUN entertainment through acting to our community. We Now would like to involve kids in the area, ages six and up, To become involved in the processes of our shows, from tech to production, to being in the show. we want it to be a hands on learning and growing experience. we’ve recently decided to search for a government grant that might be able to help us to provide better equipment, and to ensure top quality for the kids. We want this to remain completely free for the kids, and this grant will allow us to do just that.

The grant we found requires our organization to be recognized as non profit tax exempt by the IRS. We don’t know how to do this. So PLEASE please please! Can anyone help us out? All we want to do is do our part to save the arts.

best advice is to contact a lawyer. and not a internet artists on here who probably does not know what they are talking about. see a real lawyer or maybe a cpa. (certified public account) but it will most likely have to be done by a lawyer

What College/ Program should I go into?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under community arts program | 3 Comments »

I am completing my 2nd year at a community college in the Liberal Arts Program this year. I need to start the application process for a four year school, but I have no ideas on where I might go. I am interested in the following, but am not sure how to put them together:
-business
-art
-dance
-language
-travel

I am willing to travel to go to school. Location, weather, and expenses are not a problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I feel very directionless.

I would go with either a New York or Los Angeles School. There are a lot of college majors that you may be interested at these places. Also these areas are the hot beds for careers in the the following careers you listed.

Chance of getting into Dartmouth? ?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under community arts council | 3 Comments »

I absolutely adore Dartmouth College and I just applied there Early Decision. I have an ACT score of 32 and a GPA of about 4.0 (and I am ranked 5 of 135 in my class). I also take the hardest classes my school offers and am involved with speech and debate as a varsity policy debater and in Academic Challenge at my school, as well as previously in the presidential campaign as the canvass coordinator of my community and the President of Edison Students for Obama. I am a commended student, member of the announcement crew, was the Speaker Pro Tempore of the House at Buckeye Girls State, involved in several prestigious art contests, am an ex-member of the town’s art council, and am involved in Key Club and NHS. I also sent in a supplemental art form, wrote a very good essay, and have at least one excellent teacher recommendation letter (I didn’t read the others). I’ve been forming an ulcer for about the past month over whether or not I will get in, and I just conducted an interview with a representative who wanted to talk to me for only 20 minutes but ended up talking to me for 56 and said he had 6 pages of notes on me by the end of the interview (hopefully that’s a good thing?).

I know your answer will not necessarily reflect Dartmouth’s decision, but I was wondering if there is anybody out there who went through the same heartburn with this school during the application process and if they can give some kind of judgement as to how I might possibly do in front of the board of applications? (If anything else, just to give me something else to toil over, I suppose.) Thank you so much!!!!

I’m applying to Dartmouth, too, so I know what you’re going through. Your stats look pretty good to me, although you didn’t mention what your SAT Subject Test scores were. (Dartmouth requires 2 SAT Subject Tests.) It looks like you have a respectable list of extracurriculars and good academics, especially if you took the hardest classes your school has to offer, like you said.
A good book you might want to read is A is for Admission by Michele A. Hernandez. The author actually used to be a Dartmouth admissions officer, and she goes into the admissions process they used in great detail. (Granted, it was written more than a couple years ago, but I imagine that much of what she wrote still applies.) If you have time, you should check it out.
Also, a good website you could check out is www.collegeconfidential.com. There, you can find discussion forums just about the Ivy League and even ones specifically about Dartmouth. There are a lot of "chance me" threads like the one you just posted, and it’s very interesting to read through them.
Good luck!

I love making arts and crafts and would like to teach kids at my home?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under community arts center | 1 Comment »

How can I get started? Do I need to get a business licence? I’m a stay at home mom and would love to teach art on the side. I use to teach at our local community center.. but I need something a little more lenient. Thanks for your help.. I appreciate it very much .. have a wonderful day !

I would think a business licenses would be a good investment for when you file taxes but I don’t think it is necessary legally.

I would love to be able to get my child private art lessons. Advertise in pediatric offices, daycare centers, playgrounds ad community centers. Also, little signs around your neighborhood would be good.
What a great idea!:-)

What martial art is considered a JOKE in the martial art community?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under community art | 23 Comments »

This a serious question, because there does seem to be certain styles that martial artists seem to think is a joke! For EXAMPLE, you hardly ever hear anyone put down Muay Thai Kickboxing, but you’ll hear a lot of martial artists put down TKD.

Please give reasons with your response.

Ninjitsu (including Bujinkan, etc.) anything invoking Ninjitsu, Ninjas, or wears Ninja garb or Tabis.

Anything made up by someone.. including Dux-Ryu, Dillman’s Karate, anything remotely done by Ashida Kim.

Systema.

90% of the Reality Based Self Defense systems.

Few others, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

What’s a good place to start a career in the arts for a young teenager? (pic in details)?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under community arts theater | 3 Comments »

I’m 13 years old, turning 14 in June. I’m 4′10", and I’m done growing. I’m about 90 lbs, and I’m skinny. I love the arts, I’m a good actress, and I have a unique, strong voice. I can look younger or older, and I want to get started in anything arts related: modeling, movies, tv, theater, singing, pretty much anything along those lines, but I can’t really get started. I’ve done tons of local and community theater, usually lead parts, so I have local experience. I live about 30 mins from NYC, so I can get there for auditions if I can find them. Thanks =).

Can you guys tell me where I can find auditions though? I look online, and can’t ever really find any. Thanks.

Ok… well I’m basically in the same boat as you! I’m 15 and i’m still looking for jobs, but basically you need to find a decent agency in order for you to "make it"…. and it will be hard because there are millions of people who are "unique" and "talented"… i got lucky… i was scouted out by a teacher who scouts out actors and Actresses and I’m going to Hollywood. But basically keep your eyes open and your head up and try not to let opprotunities pass you by…

Keep your personnel health good too. it helps
there’s this pretty cool site called Actors Access thats amazing and gives you auditions for FREE! so use that and if any agents or "casting agents" ask for money or asks you to take classes for a ridiculous amount of money dont do it!

oh and keep learning about the craft, it helps a ton…. get a resume and a headshot… if you need anything else just contact me and i’ll help you… I’ve been where you are and someone helped me, so i’m just trying to do the same…
