Im currently attending community college with a liberal arts major, but my real passion is singing, and acting?

Posted by admin on March 5th, 2010 and filed under community arts | 2 Comments »

I feel like im just wasting my time in school. Im considering just dropping out and moving to new york to pursue my dream. Whay do you think?
I feel like being in school is just taking up time that i could be using to try to pursue my dream. I dont know if i should stay in school or drop out to do what i wanna do.

truthfully, succeeding in this industry in any city is unbelievably difficult to impossible. the chances of you supporting yourself by acting or singing alone is slim to none. new york is the most expensive city in the country, and there are about a million wannabe actors living there, all with the same dream. you have to be VERY well-informed on every aspect of the business, and also have a solid career that brings in money just to pay your bills. most people tend bar or wait tables and audition during the day whenever they can, but most auditions require you have an agent (which requires you to be unbelievably lucky and have pages and pages of professional paid work in your resume) and/or be union (which requires the same as above). unfortunately, ive known many many experience actors and signers who have moved out to nyc and l.a. to pursue their dreams, and so far noone has succeeded. its a tough existence, and even getting a side job right now is really tough, seeing as the economy is in the toilet. it would be VERY wise to stay in school

How do you support the arts and do you think enough people in your community support the arts?

plays, concerts, musicals, buying local art or pottery, buying books, fund raisers, etc.

I have season tickets to the local theatre and am a member at the art museum. We attend the occasional concert or dance performance. Many of our gifts are hand-crafted by area artisans and artists, especially painters, woodcrafters, and potters.

Chief Bolu was born to a family of traditional Yoruba healers (BABALOWO), and dedicates his life to spreading the word of Ifa Orisha through music and education. I have a question about learning Martial Arts in a Community Centre?

Posted by admin on February 25th, 2010 and filed under community arts | 7 Comments »

Okay I am planning to learn Iaido, but from what I hear people say, learning Martial Arts from a Community Centre is a scam, is that really true?

This is the link: http://www.marpoleoakridge.org/martial_arts.htm

If so, what other option do I have? I really want to learn Iaido.
But doesn’t the dojo restrict to certain levels only? And I only see two people signed up.

Actually Iaido is one of the few arts that is found in many civic centers and parks n rec programs. There is nothing wrong with that either and many Sensei use those programs to feed to their real dojo as well. The group you are referring to is an authentic system of Iaido and the Sensei, Hiro Inoue is very respected in the Eishen Ryu system. I am sure you would enjoy it. Now the Tae Kwon Do program offered at the same center flew up some flags in my book and I would probably ignore them and not train with them but when it comes to a martial art like Iaido I am sure it would be just fine.

Edit – you will have to ask them about the level question. As far as only two people that would be great. The less the number the better the instruction.

What can I do with an associate’s degree in liberal arts from a community college?

Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under community arts | 3 Comments »

Anything? Or should I just drop out now and save myself a load of money? I have about 32 credits and need 30 more to graduate, which will take me about a year and a half since I’m only going part-time.

finish your associates then get ur bachelors. if u dont plan on getting a bachelor’s, u should still finish because it will help you down the road. i am finishing my bachelors in hr management and i have seen pleny of job postings recently that require an associates degree. it wont matter what u majored in as long as u have that degree! (btw it took me 4 yrs to get my associates, so do get discouraged!)

Taiyo Na – Lovely to Me (Immigrant Mother) – Music Video – Chinatown / Love Park Philadelphia

Posted by admin on February 22nd, 2010 and filed under community arts | 25 Comments »

To commemorate this Thanksgiving weekend. I thought it would be appropriate to send this beautiful music video out to the world called Lovely to Me (Immigrant Mother) by New York based artist Taiyo Na from his debut album Love is Growth. I completed the final cut of the music video on Thanksgiving day and thought it would be nice to give thanks to our moms and to all the people who shared part in raising us.

I want to give a very special shout out and thank you to Taiyo Na for trusting me and for allowing me to take his song on this journey, to back up his beautiful song with visuals and stories from our community here in Philadelphia from Chinatown to Love Park and beyond.

A very big thank you to David Lin and the Asian Arts Initiative for helping to produce this project. As well as Eric Law and Wai Man Ip from Chinese Culture and Arts Inc. and Karen Tha and Annie Tran from QT Vietnamese Sandwich in Chinatown.

This is not just a music video it’s a community arts film project involving so many voices and volunteers. I thank you from the bottom of my heart to all who were apart of this vision. I could not have done it with out you. I was merely the conductor orchestrating all these amazing moments. I only hope that what you see is something that is unique, honest, and powerful.

Please share this with your friends, family, loved ones close and far. I hope this is a reminder to us all where we all came from.

If you like what you see please support Taiyo Na by purchasing his debut album “Love is Growth” at www.taiyona.com

You can also make a tax deductible financial contribution to the Asian Arts Initiative at www.asianartsinitiative.org

How can I transfer to a liberal arts college from a community college?

Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under community arts | 2 Comments »

I currently live in Austin and attend the community college here. Before senior year ended I wanted to go to Columbia College Chicago, but I ended up going to community college. Now that fall semester has ended, I’m thinking about transferring to Columbia College. I have only 12 credits and looking at the details, I would have to apply as a freshman. I am so confused on what I what to do…PLEASE HELP! THANKS!

You need to have 24 units to transfer. (Link below)

Of course, if you apply as a freshman, not a transfer student, then you might be able to apply your credits, but still just be a freshman. Contact the transfer counselor and find out for sure.

Your community college may have a transfer center than can advise you as well.
