Born in 1901 Florence South Carolina, William H. Johnson grew up in a poor family of seven being the eldest child. Without any money and Johnson was limited to the skills that were hidden within him. Johnson at an early age discovered that he had strong abilities to draw. Using these drawing skills to his advantage he started to create penning cartoons for local newspapers. With the help of this and a variety of jobs, he was able to save enough money to pay for the art education program at the Prestigious National Academy of Design in New York City, where he moved at the age of seventeen in 1921. His teacher Charles Harthorne helped Johnson throughout his years and helped him get into the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts during the summers of 1923 to 1926 where he graduated. Johnson did not have the supporting type of family when growing up. His mother was black with a Sioux ancestry and his father was white. His father had never supported him in his life, and was not looking forward to the goals he had. Johnson had never given up, winning the Cannon prize in 1924 and 1926 and the Hallgarten prize in 1925.
In 1926 Johnson moved to France in search of a better life with more Opportunities. There he met a weaver; Holcha Krake in 1930, before marrying her, Johnson went to South Carolina. In South Carolina he was thrown in jail, because he painted a brothel known to him only as the Jacobia Hotel. Returning to Denmark he married and lived with Krake for the next eight years in rural areas of Denmark and Norway. During these years he sold paintings until he was employed as a mural painter for the WPA. While employed he learned art techniques such as silkscreening. Some of his paintings were silkscreening, like the Going to Church, Jitterbugs, and the Street Musicians. Some of his other works are oil on canvas and oil on board paintings, such as Minnie, Landscape with the sun, and Lamentation.
During World War II he moved back to New York City to get away from Nazism. Johnson moved back to New York just to find himself in even more problems. Interracial marriages and the horrid depression were obstacles to live with. During his time in New York City, Johnson taught at the Harlem Community art Center around 1940. In 1944 his beloved wife Holcha died from breast cancer. Following Krake’s death, Johnson was deteriorating. He spent twenty-three years of his life in a state hospital in Long Island, New York. Johnson died April 1970 due to physical and mental health problems.
William Henry Johnson was a well educated man. He went through thick and thin during his years of life. He lived a hard childhood, but managed to make it through during his teen and adult years. His great fortune was not money, but his creativity and ability to draw. Johnson was one of the greatest artists during the Harlem Renaissance period.

It is an excellent story.
I would suggest that you slow it down somewhat and make clearer breaks between topics. You might break it into more paragraphs.
The conclusion worked well for me. It summarized the story well without duplicating detail.
I am not a writer but the painting names should have quotes or something.
If you are preparing the document in Word, they have a grammar feature that gives readability statistics. I have personally found it to be helpful.
Good luck!

High School GPA horrible then I got Dean’s list in college. Can I Transfer to a great Art school?

Posted by admin on March 3rd, 2010 and filed under community arts center | 3 Comments »

So basically, I graduated high school in 2005 with a 2.0 and after a year of working I decided to take my education seriously. I applied and got into State College. In my freshman year I managed a cumulative 3.6 GPA. I’m planning on staying one more semester and transfering in the spring. I want to transfer to a very good Art school.. I guess ivy league is out of the question.. Also, I took ACT rather than SAT… the math section killed me.

Here’s what I have to offer:

Major: Art Education
GPA: 3.7, grades are all A’s except for two B’s
ACT: 20
Clubs: Art Club, Habitat for Humanity (in HS yearbook/art club)
Credits: 34 (will have 15 extra from fall semester)
Extra: Job @ summer art camp as teachers assistant, Attended Skidmore College summer 6 program in the arts in 2003, courses at a local art center, Habitat for Humanity as community service.
*oh and i actually have talent in art..

the schools i would loooove to go to are:
Pratt or NYU

So am I kidding myself?

Check with the colleges you want to get into — they are the only ones who can answer your question truthfully, and they have knowledge of what they are looking for in a student. Our answers here are speculation.

Good luck.

how can i start a community center?

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010 and filed under community arts center | 1 Comment »

IN OUR STREETS THERE ARE FEW OR NO PLACES FOR OUR YOUTH TO EXPLORE THEIR IMAGINATION.ALSO TO LEARN ABOUT THEMSELVES.

OUR CHILDERN ARE BORD,THEY DON’T HAVE ANYTHING POSITIVE TO DO WHEN THEY LEAVE THEIR HOMES. IN THE HOOD,THERE ARE NO POSITIVE IMAGES THEY COULD REACH OUT TO,ONLY THE NEGATIVE.

IN OUR STREETS DRUGS,SEX AND VILENCE AND SELF HATRED ARE THE TEACHERS AND RULERS OF THE COMMUNITY.THE MIND STATE OF THE PEOPLE ARE DOWN.THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITIES DON’T CARE ABOUT WHAT THERE OWN PEOPLE IN THE NABORHOODS ARE DOING.OUR BUILDINGS ARE DIRTY AND OUR STREETS ARE FULL WITH DRUGS AND GABAGE.THERE ARE NO SINCE OF A WEARNESS OF LIFE.

SO WHAT IS THE ANSWER?WE NEED A PLACE FOR ALL WALKS OF LIFE TO GO AND LEARN ABOUT THEMSELVES.LEARN THAT THEIR ARE MORE THAN GANGSTAS PLAYERS AND HOES. THE YOUTH NEEDS TO LEARN TO BE MASTER OF SELF. ALSO TO BRING OUT THEIR STRENGTHS AND ABILITIES,LEARN HOW TO MASTER IT.

THAT IS WHERE THE BASE COME IN.THE BASE IS A PLACE TO BRING THESE QUALITIES INTO PLAY.THREW HIPHOP,THIS IS ONE OF THE WAYS TO REACH THE YOUTH.THE BASE WILL TEACH HOW TO BRING OUT THE ARTISTIC SIDE BY HAVING OPEN MIC NIGHTS,DEE JAY CLASSES,SINGING CLASSES,AND DANCE CLASSES, ART CLASSES.ALSO,TEACH ABOUT HEALTH.AND PERPARING OUR YOUTH FOR THE FUTURE.AND MUCH,MUCH MORE.

WE NEEDS A PLACE LIKE THIS. WE CAN’T WAIT FOR OTHERS TO DO FOR US. WE CAN’T WAIT FOR THE RIGHT LEADER TO COME ALONG. WE NEED THIS TYPE OF PLACE IN ALL OUR COMMUNITIES BLACK AND WHITE, RICH AND POOR NABOURHOODS.

THIS IS MY DREAM.THIS IS WHAT I AM GOING TO DEDACATE THE REST OF MY LIFE FOR.THIS IS JUST A THOUGHT,HOWEVER,I UNDERSTAND IF YOU HAVE A THOUGHT YOU COULD BRING IT INTO BEGING.BUT STILL I NEED YOUR HELP.WHAT EVER YOU CAN BRING TO THE TABLE,BRING IT.LETS DO THIS THERE IS REALLY NO MORE TIME TO WASTE.

you cannot have your entire question in all caps some people would take this as offensive and rude

this is how we roll
oNG KIng ARTs CeNtER’s mission is to make a sustainable art community. It is a space for creative risk taking, and artistic mastery.

A sustainable art community, exits in mutual support and inspiration of all involved. It depends upon the innovation of the art, the artist, and its positive effect on the community. The ability of the artist to take a chance on learning, or discovering something new, creates a constant cycle of teaching and learning. Every moment at Ong King is a stop in the cycle. Performances reveal work, classes provide guidance, and the space is electrified with growth. Here one can both become humble and try something new, and/or attain new levels of artistic mastery through practice and criticism.

How can i find out if he likes me?

Posted by admin on February 25th, 2010 and filed under community arts center | 17 Comments »

I was in a dance program at a local community arts center, there werent boys in class. So whenever we’d go out on break, all the girls in my class would be all over the musicians that would come out class. There was one boy in the class that i liked alot, but couldnt talk to him much because all the other girls were on him.
The program finished so I didnt get to make a move on him or anything. But then we started talking a lot on online. He seems to like talking to me as much i like talking to him, &now hes the first one to send an IM when were both on. We have aLOT in common, a lot more than i expected. Hes really nice, & is always complementing me. Yesterday i told him that ive always thought he was cute, &he got all shy and told me that he thinks im a cutie as well. But then i had to sign off . I dont know if hes interested in me as a friend or more than a friend. He goes to an all boys school but hes always around really pretty girls, & i dont think i can compete w/ them =[[

The best way to find out the answer to any question relating to another person’s feelings is to ask that person. You are not always guaranteed a truthful answer, but you will at least get the answer they want you to have, or the one they think you want to hear. Don’t fall into the trap of having a friend ask for you, or of trying to devise some type of test. If you cannot ask this guy if he likes you, then you need to ask your question of yourself. However, he may not know if he likes you, and he may need to get to know you better, before he can answer the question honestly.

In the end, it really doesn’t matter whether or not this guy likes you. Keep your communications with him open, which also means you must listen to what he says, and be honest with him at all times. In due time, he will tell you, in his own way, if he likes you or not. When he does, know that no matter what he relates, you will have both become enriched by the experiences you’ve shared until that time. And, if you both decide to continue your relationship further, then it will be a true and pure one, which can be more valuable than any other.

Fundraising Ideas for a Artist in Residency Visual Art Center?

Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under community arts center | 1 Comment »

I am looking for some creative ideas on how to turn Visual Art Center visitors into donors. How do you make those who walk threw the door give? I have come up with a "heart strings" idea highlighting a young student who participates in the Center’s Summer program and adding a "help us continue to make creativity happen in our community" tagline. Ideas? If YOU were going into a Visual Art Center that was completely nonprofit what would make YOU give? Even if it was a dollar, what would help you make that decision?

The Art League of Bonita Springs ran an "Off the Wall" fundraiser about two weeks ago. Go to my blog at www.fundraisingfun101.blogspot.com to read about the fundraiser and how much money they made.
