i am looking into starting an amateur drama club in my local community for children and young people, i was wondering if anyone had any advice or information that could help. i want to focus mainly on musical theatre i’ve been in contact with the arts development manager for my local council but i haven’t had much communication from his part.
If i wanted to put on a production of "annie" for example or another well known musical is there anyone i have to apply to for permission in order to do so. Also how would i fund things like set design, costumes etc,
any advice would be great…thanks

Hi

You’ll need to purchase performing rights for anything you want to stage. A good place to start to find the rights holder may be dollee.com or the Internet Theatre Bookshop. You’ll also need to obtain a public performance licence for the venue (though many public buildings and church halls already have them.

You need to look intio child protection laws, too – you may need criminal records bureau clearance to work with youngsters.

Once you get going you’ll find some of the kids will take to it and others will disrupt you – that’s kids for you. But the rewards can be tremendous.

Ok, I am a junior in an international school in Brazil. I did the first two years of hs in a normal, very small Brazilian school, so I don’t have any EC’s for those years and grades were on a 1-10 scale which translates very badly to GPA (prob around a 3.0-3.3 average for those 2 years, which will bring down my hs average). Also, when I moved from my international school to the Brazilian school I had to skip half a year of school (since the Brazilian school year is Jan-Nov, so I’d either have to skip or be held back for 6 months), which screwed stuff up. This year, I have about a 3.6 GPA. I have tutoring, school newspaper and our school’s community service program as EC’s. I’m also taking an AP course (just took the exam and am confident on a 4/5). I will def be taking another AP next year, and maybe self-study for a third exam (the school only has 8 actual AP classes). I took the PSATs twice and got a 192 and then a 200, so I’m betting on a 1900-2000 on the actual SATs which I will take in June. Took the ACTs for the first time and got a 30 with a 9 in Writing. Will take them again, think I will score better. So, I foresee my app at the end of hs will be something like:
GPA average: 3.5
SAT: 1900-2000
ACT: 31/32 with 9/10 Writing
EC’s: 2 years tutoring, 2 years school newspaper, 2 years community service, maybe 1 year of student council
AP: 4/5 on 3 AP courses
Also, I am wondering how the individual ACT scores will look. For the one I took I got: 35 Eng, 31 Reading, 30 Sci, 25 Math. Will that Math score be frowned upon?
Ok, so I know I have average grades, average EC’s, average number of APs. I think my test scores are pretty good…My counselor also said that, shallow as it is, the fact that I’m Brazilian will also help because colleges like international students. What should I be looking at? I like small-ish colleges with good Arts/Writing programs like Kenyon, Bard, Vanderbilt etc. Suggestions?

To go to college or university in the USA, all you have to do is apply as an international student. You be accepted you must meet the same academic standards as an American applicant and to have the means to pay for it. You have to pass the SAT (GRE for grad school) and if your native language is not English, the TOEFL exam. Most schools in other countries can arrange for you to take the SAT.

Look up your intended school at www.cappex.com. They put a map of unweighted GPA versus SAT scores on one of the pages. Look your scores up and you can estimate your chances of getting admitted.

As for getting your student visa, the school’s international student office takes care of most of the paperwork. And they will guide you through your part if you have been accepted for admission to that school.

Because Universities in Europe and other countries have heavy government subsidies, for a European student to consider a US school, they are in for what we call “sticker shock” The cost of attending a US University for an International student in the US is between US$35,000 to US$65,000 per year.

As well, you have to prove you have this sort of funding available to you from family, a sponsor or student loans that you got from your home country.

You cannot make enough money working in the US while at school there to pay your way either. Your student visa limits you to 20 hours a week of work (40 in the summer). This work must be either an on campus job or an outside job that the school approves as being relevant experience for your degree.

For finance, private US schools may give you a partial scholarship but public schools will give you no aid. My Canadian daughter got $9500 a year from her US undergrad school towards the $33,000 a year cost.

However, in some cases, like for Canadians going to a US school, you may be able to get aid from your native country. In my daughter’s case, the BC and Canadian governments loaned her a total of $10,000 per year.

Beyond the scholarship and loans, her grandmother contributed $4800 Canadian a year and I paid the rest, about US$12,000 a year.

Graduate students can get a GA (Graduate Assistanceship) after their first semester which will pay their tuition and give them a small living allowance if they have an exceptionally good GPA. My Canadian daughter earned one with her 4.0 GPA and because a US government research institute felt her research is important to the USA. Doctoral students, if they get a decent fellowship during grad school in the USA and if their research is considered important enough can get fully funded PhDs.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/40703034

_______________________________________________________

Useless Classes

The reason they teach you that stuff that seems useless to you in high school is because the people who run the schools cannot tell the future. They know that 90% will be useless to you. But neither you nor they know which 10% will be gold to you.

Therefore they shovel all of it to you.

Employers do not really care that much about the information you learned, especially high school. They want to see that high school diploma and college degree to prove you can handle BS. Because there is way more BS at work than at school.

Just realize that if you drop out of high school you will have proved to employers you cannot handle the amount of BS high school gives you let alone the way higher amount you will be fed at work.

Hello, I just wanted some opinions and thoughts on the chances of me getting accepted into Boston College! Please let me know if you think there is anything I can better myself in. I’ll appreciate all replies!

I am currently a Junior. Freshman year I took 2 standard classes and 3 honors classes (got all As). Sophomore year I took 5 honors classes (got 3 As and 2 89s). Junior year I am currently taking 2 AP courses and 3 honors (currently receiving As in all but one class). Senior year I am planning to take 4 AP courses and 1 honors class. On our school’s 5.0 scale, I have a 4.4 GPA. I am number 11 in my class of 184 students (top 5%).

Aside from grades, I am an active member of Student Council, National Honors Society, and Yearbook club. I am also the secretary of Academic Decathlon. I have been invited to (and joined) the National Society for High School Scholars. I have been a member of the school’s Varsity Track & Field team for the past 3 years (and will be next year).

I recently got my SAT scores (math – 720, writing – 600, critical reading – 530 :[ ) with total score of 1850. (I think with enough prep over the summer I can get that up to a 2000 or close to it at September’s test date.)

Outside of school, I have worked at a local supermarket for about a year. I have also held community service jobs at two local libraries and help out with the Art’s Council’s events over the summer. I have about 100 hours of community service.

My mom is an alumni to the school and finally I’m planning to write an awesome essay!

So if anyone who has any tips would like to give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated! This is basically my dream school. Thanks in advance.

Anything is possible! You should talk to your school Guidance Counselor?

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/596792432/forts-and-the-inbetween

We’re hitting the road to build forts and community with strangers. We’re traveling through the United States, Canada, and Mexico during the months of June, July, and August of 2011. While on the road we have a few specific focuses. One of our focuses is to build forts.

A fort is a creative space that brings people together to ask questions, act on them, empower, and be empowered. It’s a safe space. It’s a space to freely use your imagination and be yourself. Somewhere you can start a conversation that will grow you, and your community into something exceptional. We want to be inspired to live brilliantly, profoundly, and generously by building forts with others.

Another focus is partnering with different organizations and institutions. From art councils, education departments, urban gardens, refugee committees, youth programs, community projects to national parks. We’ll be engaging with them via fort building, but also participating in the incredible things they’re already doing.

I built one of those when I was a kid. We called it a camp or a tree house. What a waste of time for adults to do this.

Hello!.. I think you are doing a great job! Wow…. I wish I were as active as you!..
You have a excellent GPA, and being in the top 5% is fantastic. Your SAT scores is great… but… if you plan on retaking it, which I hope you do, the best part (I think) is that you can send the college your highest scores. You know what, go and give it a shot, and take the SAT again, and its okay if you do good or bad. I think it is math that you need to improve (I am terrible at math as well, so i know how that feels). Otherwise, if you take or do not take the SAT.. still go for it. Fill out that application because after reading your post… I have this great feeling that you will be accepted.
here is something that i hope helps you that i found on their website… what they also look at:
"In selecting students, the Committee on Admission looks for demonstrated evidence of academic ability, intellectual curiosity, strength of character, motivation, creativity, energy, and promise for personal growth and development. The Committee also carefully considers recommendations by counselors and teachers, the required personal statement and extracurricular activities. Requests for financial aid do not affect decisions on admission."
So, I wish you the best of luck in your college journey and ahead!..

You are an excellent student, but it’s all pretty generic. When you apply for BC, an excellent college, almost everyone will have great grades, great extracurriculars, etc. What makes you so different? Answer me that, and then somehow incorporate it into your application. If you don’t have an answer, I suggest you do something. Organize a blood drive, for example.

Also, your community service is kind of pitiful, sorry. By the time I was 16, I had over 450 hours of community service. Colleges don’t need to see that you can put yourself ahead in life, they want to see that you can better the community.

And yeah, get your SAT score up there (it’s not THAT bad, though– if you improve everything else, you could still definitely get in with that score).

I am a sophomore in high school. My school is one of the best in my town; all of the classes are honors, advanced honors or AP. So, right now, I have a 4.32 GPA (weighted… sorry. I have asked for my unweighted GPA) and I take Adv Honors English, Adv Honors Latin, AP European History, Honors Chemistry, Photography, & Honors Algebra II. I’m also Fine Arts Rep for my grade, and I plan to run for class president junior and senior year (or just student council president). I do tech for plays, community service, and I will have a job very soon.

We took a PSAT and the PLAN test (I think that was what it was called). My composite score, competing with juniors whom the test is actually made for, is a 25 of 32. That’s low because I’m a sophomore and the test is for juniors. I scored well for my grade level, or so my college counselor said. In English, my composite score was 23. Mathematics, 24. Reading, 24. Science, 27. I scored all A’s in the tests. I scored higher than the percentage of students in my school in all subjects except for Science, by 2% (I made a 98%). With the PSAT, I scored higher than 75% of the national percentage of juniors; and 82% higher of the national percentage of sophomores (I averaged all of my scores, 93%, 89%, and 65%)

The composite score was not for ACT, but for SAT. This was weighted from Junior’s scores. I believe that this will rise next year, obviously. They predicted me to make a 26-30 on my ACT. I think I will do better than that.

Next year, I plan to take AP US History, AP Latin IV, AP English, AP Chemistry, Pre-AP Art (half the amount of art pieces required, I am not allowed to take four AP classes.), and Honors Pre Cal. Also, I plan to take AP Biology or Physics senior year. I intend to take English until senior year, on top of Heritage.

At the rate I am going, does anyone think that Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Princeton, or Cornell are options for me?

My History teacher, also my "advisor", actually attended and taught at Cornell. I’m one of the top students in his class, so maybe I can get a good recommendation. I would most prefer to study abroad in England or in Ivy League. I really want to double major in Chemistry and History (or Political Science, or Politics in general, or Government) and minor in an art and English. I know in England that you are only permitted to study one subject though.

Also; I really need an internship on top of the summer courses I’m taking. Any suggestions as to how to get these?

Thanks everyone!

It seems to me that you are on the right track for an Ivy League school, and I suggest that you talk to your history teacher more about this. However, I wonder what you plan on doing with a double major in chemistry and history. There is not a lot of jobs for chemistry historians. Better that you get a masters degree and a PhD than two majors that do not connect. Neither do chemistry and government or political science. What career path do you plan to follow? Talk about this with your history teacher.
If you want to go into politics here in the USA you probably would do better to get your education here rather than England.

It is one thing to want to study a particular set of fields, and something else to actually work in the fields studied, particularly when the student has no experience in the fields and probably has no idea of what actually goes with the jobs in those fields.

Regards,
Dan

I’m applying to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, UChicago, and Columbia. Can you please give my stats an honest review? Do you think I’ll get into at least one of these schools? Do you have any suggestions for improving my application? Thanks so much!
Objective:
•SAT I (breakdown):780CR/720M/800W(10E) I’m planning to retake in January.
•SAT II: I’m aiming for a 780+ on world history, math II, and literature.
•Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.99
•Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): I don’t think my school ranks but if it did I’d be 1/9
•AP (place score in parenthesis): School doesn’t offer A.P. courses, but it allows juniors and seniors to take the exams. I’ll be taking at least four exams this May (English literature, calculus BC, US history, and biology).
•Senior Year Course Load: We don’t get to choose what courses we take, and there are no honors or accelerated courses. We’re given physics, calculus, technology, university preparation, Arabic II, Saudi Arabian history, geography, and culture, British literature, economics, civics, French III, and physical education.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): No scholastic competitions that I can participate in take place at our school or in this country. However, I placed second in my school in the University of Toronto National Biology Competition and received a SABIC award for scholarly achievement in my sophomore year. I’m also on the High Honor Roll every semester.
Subjective:
•Extra-curriculars: I live in a highly restrictive sleepy town whose traditions and laws stand between girls and community involvement. Therefore, the activities I love tend to happen within school or in my house. Volleyball: varsity, intramurals, lunchtime, school tournament, after school, (varsity girls captain and setter, intramurals captain, most valuable player, tournament official) – 600 hours; Badminton: junior varsity, varsity, lunchtime, after school, summer (junior varsity and varsity girls captain, first seed) – 500 hours; Creative writing: websites, contests, poetry, publishing – 400 hours; Contemporary music: piano club, band jam, talent shows, vocal, covers – 1400 hours; Acting: musical theater, monologues (lead role in musical) – 300 hours; Student council: social, Haiti fundraiser, website, game night, arts week (secretary, class president, website administrator) – 300 hours
•Job/Work Experience: Women, let alone teenage girls, cannot work where I live, and it would be a cultural transgression for a girl like me, who is dependent on a father who receives a sufficient salary, to work.
•Volunteer/Community service: senior representative for AFG, teachers’ volunteer, Africa fundraiser, Pakistan fundraiser, PETA activist, FreeRice and online community service, tutoring, graduation video, talent show MC – 1400 hours
•Summer Activities: My summer activities have included studying for the SAT, playing badminton, performing community service, reading, planning and taking trips to India, Malaysia, Singapore, Oman, and Sri Lanka, creative writing, and practicing music.
•Essays: They are very personal, poignant reflections on two significant parts of who I am.
•Teacher Recommendations: One is from a teacher who’s taught me English for three years and history for one; she has told me that she’s been honored to teach me and that she expects my name to be well-known one day. The other is from a teacher who has taught me history for two years and economics, civics, and English for one. She’s the one in charge of the graduating class. She thinks I’m very intelligent, hard-working, and pleasant; she’s sure I’m getting into a top-notch school. So basically, I think my teacher recommendations will be superb.
•Counselor Rec: It’ll be good because he’s very impressed with my SAT score. However, he doesn’t know me well, and that may show through in the recommendation.
Other
•Country (if international applicant): I’m an Indian citizen applying from Saudi Arabia
•School Type: Private American-curriculum international school
•Ethnicity: Indian
•Gender: Female
•Income Bracket: $50,000 to $60,000
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’ve lived in a small town in Saudi Arabia for most of my life. I know five languages (English, Malayalam, French, Hindi, and Arabic). I’m also vegan; I’m a huge animal lover. And finally, I’m an Asian with a passion for literature and the humanities rather than for the stereotypical math and science.

You’d be better off if you liked the math and science majors; you can do a lot more to stand out for those schools in those subjects. As it stands, you’re about an average applicant for them – which means you need a backup plan. Top schools are not backup plans. Try your state schools as well.

I have a 3.85 unweighted GPA. (My school doesn’t weight.) I’ve taken 4 AP classes and a countless number honors classes. I am definitely in the top 10% of my class. I work extremely hard at my arts high school, so I take academic and arts classes every day.

I have a 1760 on the SAT. 620 in CR, 550 in Math, 590 in Writing. I know my scores are low!

I have a personal relationship with the president of the university and other friends on staff there. They have all assured me that they will talk to the admissions staff about me.

My sister attended GU and was a super star student there. She passed away before graduation, so I wrote my essay about her. I wrote two essays for them that I worked really hard on. They were well-thought-out, if I do say so myself.

I am president of Beta Club, Vice President of Student Council for four years, and member of National Honor Society. I started another community service club at my school this year. I am also the president of my city’s youth council appointed by the mayor. I have over 100 hours of community service from working at an abused women’s and children’s rehabilitation house.

I am extremely involved in church choir, youth group, and church camps. I am the president of my state’s denomination’s church camp.

Georgetown is my number one. Will I get in?
My interview went perfectly. The interviewer told me that he would give me the highest remarks. He said, " I sincerely hope that you get into Georgetown, and I will do all I can to make that possible!"

Its hard to say with this because GU places a lot of emphasis on the SAT scores, and you know that yours a pretty low, but your GPA is alright, and with your essay I think that it improves your chances. Dont you have to have an interview? How did that go.
I would say yes,
good luck
great school
