This is a video of the speech Mrs. Leah Prunty gave at the Youth Community Development Council Culmination Ceremony. Branches of the council consisted of high school and junior college students who came together to award worthy organizations a grant to help make positive changes in their communities. The grant supported the LPDA Summer Open Air Concert which took place on Saturday, June 12, 2010. The concert was a vehicle to get the word out about the importance of keeping arts education as a part of students regular learning experience in schools. The concert also raised funds to purchase classroom supplies for the Leah Prunty Dance Arts After School Performing Arts Program.

An associate’s degree is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges, technical colleges and some four-year bachelors degree-granting colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study usually lasting two years. In the United States and, uncommonly, in Canada, an associate’s degree is equivalent to the first two years of a four-year college or university degree. It is the lowest in the hierarchy of post-secondary academic degrees offered in these countries.

Now I am planning on maybe going into a program with a lot of psychology, sociology and philosophy. The course says that it is suited for people who have good communication skills(not great or excellent communication skills).

So what should I expect from this course? Thanx in advance.

It will not lead you to a degree specific position, but you will be able to say that you had completed 2 years of college.

Ryan met up with Washington DC residents in front of the Nations Capitol Building in November of 2008 here is a clip of what Will had to say about the disappointment of the George W Bush administration as well as his thoughts on Barack Obama’s future as the 44th President of the United States of America.

********************

Barack Hussein Obama II born August 4, 1961 is the President-elect of the United States and the first African American to be elected President of the United States. Obama was the junior United States Senator from Illinois from 2005 until he resigned on November 16, 2008, following his election to the Presidency. His term of office as the 44th U.S. president begins January 20, 2009.

He is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was president of the Harvard Law Review. Obama worked as a community organizer and practiced as a civil rights attorney before serving three terms in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004. He also taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. Following an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, he announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate in January 2003, won a primary victory in March 2004, and was elected to the Senate in November 2004. Obama delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004.

As a member of the Democratic minority in the 109th Congress, he helped create legislation to control conventional weapons and to promote greater public accountability in the use of federal funds. He also made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. During the 110th Congress, he helped create legislation regarding lobbying and electoral fraud, climate change, nuclear terrorism, and care for U.S. military personnel returning from combat assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I own two music studios where we and teachers we’ve hired teach private lessons mostly to rich kids and adults, because private instruction is quite expensive. I appreciate the income but before I went into this business I was teaching music in urban schools, because before music my real dream was always to help disadvantaged kids to grow and thrive in life in general through music with all its rewards. My career led me to where I am now but I don’t like excluding those who cannot afford it.

So I’m looking into grants and I’m finding several from the National Endowment For The Arts that seem just right but are only for non-profit organizations, and I’m wondering if we can somehow create one and then pay those who deserve to be paid but agree to use any money beyond that directly to the cause.

Can this work or will I always just be a for-profit business?

Thanks

If it interests any of you, the following is the grant I want, if not now, then in the future.

An organization may submit only one application through one of the following FY 2011 Grants for Arts Projects categories: Access to Artistic Excellence, Challenge America Fast-Track, Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth. The Arts Endowment’s support of a project may start on or after June 1, 2011. Introduction The National Endowment for the Arts is committed to providing leadership in arts education by inspiring all young Americans through rich arts experiences. A high quality education in the arts opens a critical gateway to a lifetime of appreciation and engagement. For two reasons, learning in the arts is an indispensable part of American education: 1) children celebrate and participate in their cultural inheritance, and 2) academic and social maturity follow directly from arts education experiences. The Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth category offers funding for projects that help children and youth acquire knowledge and understanding of and skills in the arts. Projects must provide participatory learning and engage students with skilled artists, teachers, and excellent art. Funded projects apply national or state arts education standards. All projects submitted to the Learning in the Arts category must include: Experience: Students and their teachers will have the chance to experience exemplary works of art — in live form where possible. Study: Through the guidance of teachers, teaching artists, and cultural organizations, students will study works of art in order to understand the cultural and social context from which they come, and to appreciate the technical and/or aesthetic qualities of each work. Where appropriate, study will include the acquisition of skills relevant to practicing the art form. Performance: Informed by their experience and study, students will create artwork. In the case of literature, the primary creative activities will be writing and/or recitation. Assessment: Students will be assessed according to national or state arts education standards. Where appropriate, projects will employ multiple forms of assessment including pre- and post-testing. NOTE: The required Learning in the Arts components may be provided in partnership with other organizations. The Arts Endowment strongly endorses the arts as a core academic subject area. Organizations must provide curriculum frameworks and carefully designed evaluations to assess every child’s progress in achieving proficiency in the arts. In this category, the Arts Endowment hopes to call attention to projects that recognize and cultivate best practices in the field of arts education for children and youth. Learning in the Arts projects may take place in school-based or community-based settings and should focus on children and youth in the general age range of 5 through 18 years. (NOTE: Adult and intergenerational learning is supported under Access to Artistic Excellence.)

It will take quite a while to establish a separate nonprofit entity, and it would have to be separate and completelly independent from your current business. You would have to register the organization as a nonprofit whose entire existence is to advance the purpose of the mission. You would not ‘own’ the nonprofit, it would be run by a Board of directors. To be eligible for grant or foundation funding, you would also have to apply for tax-exempt status from the IRS. You should take a look at the steps necessary to establish a nonprofit at The Foundation Center – foundationcenter.org – under the FAQS section of the "getting started’ tab. As well, take a look at the IRS document, "Life Cycle of a Tax Exempt Organization, at the IRS website under the Charities tab.

However, the proposal states: NOTE: The required Learning in the Arts components may be provided in partnership with other organizations. The Arts Endowment strongly endorses the arts as a core academic subject area.

So find a school or academically based music related nonprofit in your area, and talk to them about partnering with them for this grant. It’s your best (and possibly only) shot.

King Achilla Orru Apaa-Idomos blindness has not deterred him from pursuing his passions. From the age of six, when he lost his sight to measles, he learned to find ways around obstacles. His life of achievement in music and community involvement is a testament to his success at moving forward with his dreams, despite the difficulties.

After arriving in Canada in 1989, King Achilla needed to acquire the skills to function independently in a highly organized society. He had spent the previous four years in a refugee camp in Kenya – a way of life completely different from what he found in Canada.

King Achillas scholastic record from Uganda qualified him for acceptance to Dalhousie University in the International Development program, from which he graduated in 1994. Despite the heavy academic load, he was able to start a band, Baana Afrique, in his second year of university.

King Achillas music has received considerable critical acclaim for its unique blend of the African lokombe sound with rhythms and sounds of Western instruments.

Since arriving in Toronto in 1995, he has toured with Baana Afrique all across Canada. In Toronto the band has played at Roy Thompson Hall, CBC Glen Gould Studio, Harbourfront, major festivals and the International Youth celebrations for the Papal visit in 2003.

In January 2008 King Achilla was featured as the soloist of the year with the Royal Dutch Wind Ensemble in Amsterdam at the Concertgebouw, one of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe.

With the support of government grants, King Achilla has produced three CDs, which have received international acknowledgment, including the FIATTE Memorial Award for best traditional performer in 1996, recognition from the World Music Symposium in Germany twice, and a Juno nomination in 2005 for Best World Music of the Year.

King Achilla has also given back to the community by serving on a number of boards and through benefit concerts. He has lent his musical talents to many charities, including Amnesty International, Crossroads Canada, YMCA, UNESCO, Canada World Youth, Human Rights Canada, CNIB, AMREF, Stepping Stones, and the Jane Goodall Institute. He is regularly called upon by federal and provincial political parties to sing O Canada to open various functions.

What to many of us, would seem to be an obvious barrier, has been turned by King Achilla into a positive force to strengthen his considerable resolve, determination and resourcefulness. King Achillas talent has enriched his adopted community of Toronto, the world venues that have enjoyed his music and his native Uganda. Achilla is truly a global citizen for Toronto to be proud of.
