This painting symbolizes the faith we place in President-Elect Barack Obama, who manifests our hope for the unity of many diverse people groups; we wanted to present him a gift that represents our humanity, not our politics, in the cause of moving our great nation forward.
As illustrated in the accompanying video, many non-artists contributed to this work. Just as it is not easy for artists to let others touch their art, it also can be difficult to entrust our lives and our values to another. This painting is proof that when the vision is clear and the visionary remains actively engaged, the successful outcome is ensured.

Buddy Art is a program designed to provide art activities for children with special needs and/or physical disabilities. The program is free and is sponsored by This Century Art Gallery in cooperation with the Sharpe Community Scholars Program at the College of William & Mary and James City County Parks & Recreation.

A variety of art activities are offered based on the ages, ability levels, and interests of the participating children. Each child is assigned a volunteer “Buddy” to work with them one-on-one, helping them to explore the materials, and replenishing their supplies as needed. Each station has a volunteer Activity Supervisor who is responsible for setting up and overseeing the activity and explaining to participants what the materials were and how to use them. Participants may stay in one area or explore multiple activities during the duration of the class period.

Each week has a theme such as “Self-Portraits” or “Fall Leaves”. There are generally five art stations including activities such as Finger-painting, Clay (air-drying clay), Collage (cutting or tearing & pasting colored/textured papers and other objects), Drawing (crayons; markers; pastels; colored pencils; drawing pencils), Stamping (with stamps relating to the theme), and Easel Painting (tempera). Special projects might include body-tracings for self-portraits or printmaking projects such as leaf-printing.

Parents are invited to participate with their child or to simply observe. Buddies are assigned to each child regardless of the parents participation so that the parent can share the activity without having to be responsible for managing the art materials and set-up.

The Buddy Art program will continues with Fall & Spring sessions of 4-6 classes scheduled during the William & Mary academic terms with students from the Wm & Mary Sharpe Program continuing to serve as “Buddies”.

It has been an exciting year for the patients and guests at Rotary House since the Houston Salsa Dancers have danced into their lives! As part of the hotel’s monthly activities, Patient Guest Relations hosts a dance showcase once a month in the Rotary House Atrium. Volunteers from many different organizations performing various types of dance come to share their talents with our guests. We would like to extend warm thanks to all of our volunteer dancers, and also want to give special thanks to the Houston Salsa Dancers for making a one-year commitment to bring rhythm and joy to our guests.

The Houston Salsa Dancers, Inc. is a non-profit organization that promotes fine arts programs, education, and community service for Houston’s youth. The organization has many facets. They serve the community through a scholarship program, college/career day program, dance classes, dance programs at HISD schools, and various cultural events.

Houston Salsa Dancers, Inc. also has a professional dance team that performs around the city and country representing the organization. Members of the dance team also give dance lessons and performances as a form of community service.
The purpose of Houston Salsa Dancers, Inc. is not only to expose students to different communities, cultures and heritages through dance, but also to help them build a positive body image and self esteem, increase strength, flexibility, agility, and encourage positive socialization.

The dance team is a diverse group that shares the passion for dancing with the purpose of promoting cultural awareness. Dancing creates an environment that encourages collaboration, socialization, and decision-making. Their mission is to be a professional dance company that focuses on the community through purposeful, creative performances designed to uplift and motivate the audience.
Get ready for some fun on Friday, July 7th at 7:00p.m. when the Houston Salsa Dancers return for the next dance showcase. They will exhibit several dances, and you might even pick up a step or two! Audience participation is welcome.
