Chances at Columbia? [Any advice?]?

Posted by admin on March 5th, 2010 and filed under community arts theater | 1 Comment »

Hello.
I’ve always been the type to get high grades, but my freshman year was spent at a highly competitive school that has been called the top in the state. My GPA bordered 85 and 89, unweighted [thanks to math.]

I took Spanish 1 and 2 as well as Algebra 1 and Geometry in middle school and will continue to take classes in mathematics and Spanish until I run out of courses to take within them–which in Spanish will happen after junior year. I’ve been published in local poetry anthologies and work as a staff member [hopefully an editor this year] of my school literary magazine.
I work a a regular volunteer and as a part of a volunteer group at my local library and am an assistant teacher at my sunday school. I am planning on creating a tutoring service for younger children wanting to learn Spanish or helping them in math, my two strongest areas.

I have been involved in theatre arts, volunteering at my community theatre, but have not found time to be in shows the past year. To compensate, I help out building sets for plays and am trying to work through the process of planning out a play to direct at a local school.

I will be doing 4 AP’s as a sophomore [Spanish Language, Evnvironmental Systems, US History, Computer Science]. All the rest of my classes are Pre-IB and Honors.

I’m also on the lacrosse team and will be entering the International Baccalaureate my junior year. [About to be a sophomore as I write this.]

By the end of summer I will be CPR, AED and Red Cross Certified.

If it matters, I’m Hispanic and also Muslim.
———–

Hopefully I’ll be able to major in physics with a minor in Spanish literature or drama. I’m highly intent on studying premed in college as well, and I know Columbia has a fantastic premed program.

Columbia’s been my dream school as long as I can remember, but after this past year I’m worried that it might not become a reality. It definately was not an easy year and my grades just added insult to injury.
Do I still have a shot at getting in?
Do you have any advice for someone who’s interested in attending?
What are my chances at other schools [Cornell, NYU, Vassar, Brown specifically?]

Thanks!

Posted by admin on March 3rd, 2010 and filed under community arts theater | 5 Comments »

I am thinking about becoming an actor?

Posted by admin on March 1st, 2010 and filed under community arts theater | 5 Comments »

Ive been wanting to become an actor for a long time now. The last play i remember myself being in was a church play when i was in the 1st grade i believe. I havent acted since then, and im going into the 11th grade. I do live near hollywood, id say about 2 hours away, so going to auditions isnt a problem. My highschool does offer a theater arts program, but i have judgemental friends, and if i join the class, i know they will say something negative, so i was thinking about going to classes at a local community college. After that i was going to take some acting classes. Maybe be in some local plays. If i follow this path, what would you say my acting career would turn out? I do want to star in movies/tv one day.

The sooner you start and the more experience you can gather the better. I have been working in theatre at school, community theatre’s and semi-professional theatre’s when I have time, and I am interested in shows. However, Live theatre and TV/ commercial acting are two totally different areas, but experience is experience my only suggestion is don’t worry about what your friends say, if you want to act do it! If they are really your friends they will support you in whatever you want to do.

How is Liberty University?

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010 and filed under community arts theater | 2 Comments »

Im thinking about transferring to liberty university after a year or two at a local community college.
I have been visiting their website lately and a bunch of things have caught my interest such as:
Their Law School
Theater Arts program..which i probably might minor in if i go there
and the year round Snowplex Centre
Just tell me how the school is and campus life and all that
plus what is drama in the church…its a class for the theatre arts

you’d be better off going to a real school. Liberty is a joke (100% acceptance so long as your money is good) and employers know it. Liberty Law would just be a waste of tuition.

Take your CC credits and transfer to a real university.

Question about performing arts colleges?

Posted by admin on February 25th, 2010 and filed under community arts theater | 2 Comments »

If I want to get into a good performing arts college, would it be more impressive to have a huge acting resume OR to impress them at an audition and have a resume with unique things on it?

I’m only a freshman and I’ve been thinking about college since the 7th grade.
I want to apply somewhere like Tisch or Julliard. (I know its incredibly hard, you don’t have to tell me) Obviously I aim for the stars, which is probably not good since I’m most likely not going to get in to those schools. I have backups, don’t worry.
Anyway, I know a bunch of people who are also interested in acting, and they have stage moms so they are in countless productions at community theatres. Some have even been in movies.
I’ve been in musicals/plays a lot, and I do as much as I can because I love it, but I’m always fighting to keep my straight A’s, so clearly I’m not in a production 24/7.

Are top-notch arts colleges like those looking for people who show they’re experienced and talented (AKA prodigies), or someone who has the talent, not AS experienced (but still experienced) and shows what a unique individual they are?

Bottom line is they are looking for talent and teach-ability. (your audition) When its all said and done, no one cares about high school productions.

I’m get getting my GED to pursue my dreams in acting?

Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under community arts theater | 3 Comments »

Hi, In order to graduate in my state i must pass a test called TAKS. i’m 19 should of graduated last year and failed the taks 4 TIMES! my plan is to get my GED then attend a community college in theater arts and begin my acting career as an actor good idea?!?!??!?!?!
i’m in the GARLAND area, Dallas tx. btw

These stupid tests SUCK. They mean nothing and I wouldn’t take them 4 times. Look, it sounds you don’t have a high school diploma, so I think you should absolutely get the GED, then everything will be easy and attending a community college a good place to start.
Which state is that btw? OMG!

WTMD’s Video Presentation to Operate the Senator Theatre in Baltimore

Posted by admin on February 22nd, 2010 and filed under community arts theater | 2 Comments »

This video was played at the Public Meeting at the Senator Theatre. WTMD would like to move our studios and offices to the Senator and operate the theater as community arts and media center. We would program a mix of blockbuster movies, retrospectives, festivals, concerts, community events, children’s programming and of course station events.

The video features a history of the Senator, interviews with people who live or work nearby as well as students, musicians and others about our proposal. If you have comments or suggestions, please email wtmd@towson.edu
