I’m a sophomore in high school right now, and only last year did I really start learning about drama, but I really love it and would like to pursue it in college. As far as I know, Tisch is one of the best schools for film and theatre but it’s very competitive to get in. I’m worried that I don’t have enough experience. As far as academics are concerned, I think I’m set. I’m taking all honors and AP, and my GPA is almost 4.0, 99.3 on a 100 pt. scale. Is there anything else I should do academically? I’m also very involved in music and band and compete regularly – does that help?
I am in theatre and drama club at school, and so far I have been in five plays and musicals either at school or at the community theatre downtown, but nothing huge and so far no leading roles. I also did a few videos for an insurance company when I was little for marketing purposes. I know I still have two more years to establish a more impressive resume, but mainly:
I want to know if I have a chance starting as late as I have in theatre or if I’ll be completely overshadowed by more experienced actors if I apply to NYU for drama. What is most important when auditioning (and applying)?
I think you are fine as the academic stand point. You may want to have something that makes you stand out from the crowd. You are right to be worried about NYU for drama. It’s very hard to get into it, and acting itself may not be for you. I have been acting since I was 6, and have been in more than 20 plays. I now for the past 3-4 years have been getting a film actor, and have two talent agents. Acting is really not about how good looking you are, or how talented you are. It is just about timing and luck! You can see all of those stars getting discovered in restaurants, at banks, and on accident. The good think about NYU is that they need to have people who have potential and not pro actors, but experience does help. You may have a shot, but you need to start getting real training at an acting studio. You don’t even have to live in a major city, but just don’t go into things which are scams. Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Nashville, Milwaukee, and etc are all city’s which have may have a market for you. It may be too late, but you need practice on those monologues. You may also need to have a back up plan. I would double major in something else, and know for a fact NYU lets you do this. I want to do print journalism and film acting. You also need to find out if you want to do theater or film acting. There both very different. You may or not get in, but don’t feel bad if you don’t. There people who have been acting since 5, and still don’t get in. Good Luck!

I need 6 hours of hummanities my guidance counselor recommended early/mod world hum which im failing miserably basically studying art with naked men that and it seems impossible.idk even know where to start in studying it.
choices for classes include ethics/logic/intro to religion/theatre/dance/philosophy
Religion and philosophy classes are relatively easy, I would recommend those.
Why can’t the people who think outside the box unite together in every city and town in the USA and not necessarily for political purposes,
but to rejuvenate a renaissance of sidestream art, theatre, independent film, fuse multiple cultures together, exercise their pets, create a sense of community for kids without siblings, stuff like that.
Like on Sundays. Why can’t we try to make this happen? Not with money, but with willpower and heart and soul?
Because artists have to eat too?
I live in a small town, around three thousand people.
Its a fairly lower middle class area, without much money for extras. But we do have a few things at the library, there are a pretty homogeneous bunch, you would be hard put to find different cultures here, maybe in a few years.
Truthfully, most of the kids here have two or more siblings and schools are where the parents get together.
There is a dancing/acting school, but its not available for adults.
We also have farmers markets on Thursday in front of the library.
We aren’t in really bad shape for such a small community.
There just isn’t enough people with money to support the artists or the arts to make it viable, and for renting films, paying for electricity and heat, keeping up a theater. You need more than willpower, you do need that money.
Here is our version of the air Hector the Hero. Dedicated to those who have left us too soon.

How much experience would i need to put on my application? Ive taken a theatre course at my college, an acting class outside of school.
Ive also taken a film course in high school and done a film camp. Would I put any of my film stuff on the resume?
I also plan on volunteering at a community theater this semester and taking another acting class. I’ve always been interested in the "art of storytelling" (film and theatre), but my high school did not have a good drama program AT ALL so now i need to try and make up for it quickly before i try and apply. any suggestions would be great!
Well, in terms of taking theatre as a major (get ready to be exhausted beyond belief, by the way), the longer the resume, the better the chances. It also depends on your latest grades you’ve acquired (colleges want someone dedicated to their work in all fields, not just the one they’re applying for) and which school you went to (some places can be a bit biased; they might give a better chance to someone who went to a school with a better theatre program, as you well know, than a person who isn’t).
In terms of theatre, I would suggest the plays you’ve done and which parts you played as well as any possible technical work you’ve done (some colleges offer technical courses like for lights and sound to go with their theatre programs).
As for film, hmm…it’s tougher. Have you ever made any independent films? If so, send a copy with your resume and put whatever courses you had taken as well.
Best of luck to you!
Planning a move… We are in our early 40’s and will be empty nesting soon. Love Raleigh and will eventually enlist the help of a real estate agent, but hope someone can steer us in the right direction. Looking for a small (2BR,2Bath) apartment or condo near downtown or right in downtown. We love the theatre and arts, parks, shopping, college community. But we are on a budget too. Can anyone suggest some areas to look (or areas to stay clear of)? Really want a city lifestyle – no yards, walking to most places, etc. Anything like that in Raleigh?
The downtown area of Raleigh has a lot more housing options than it did just a decade ago, so getting a "city lifestyle" is definitely possible. Alot will depend on your budget, of course, but hopefully you can benefit from the housing costs being down lately. Plus a couple of new condo buildings have just opened up downtown in the last year, as well as a new apartment building, all adding even more units. Add townhomes and single-family houses in the neighborhoods surrounding downtown and you’ve got a good supply going.
I think as empty nesters looking for a good area with entertainment, shopping and dining options, you will definitely enjoy being in downtown area.
Both downtownraleigh.com and downtownraleigh.org have pages listing housing options such as condos and townhomes. Craigslist often advertises a good few units as well as the locally-run Independent Weekly magazine. The Glenwood Agency is widely-known as the realtor that specializes in the downtown area, although there are certainly others that could help.
This week Artsworld visits Freedom Theatre in the Jenin refugee camp. This pioneering project is the only professional venue for theatre and the arts in the north of the Palestinian occupied territories. Zakaria Zubeidi, the head of the al Aqsa Martyr’s Brigade in Jenin in the West Bank, has now put down his weapons and believes that children’s theatre is an important way to fight for Palestinian statehood.
The programme also features the China Disabled People’s Performing Arts Troupe, which has entertained audiences in more than 50 countries. The troupe consists of 100 performers who say their tightly knit community has given them a renewed sense of pride and purpose despite a history of discrimination that continues to haunt many of China’s 80 million people with disabilities.

Hey so yeah I’m now a Junior at a college prep school. (just finished sophomore year today!) And I’ve pretty much dreamed of attending NYU tisch since 7th grade. I just want to know what score I should aim for on the SAT, and anything else I might need to prepare for.
As far as my resume goes, I’ve been in chorus for my entire highschool being, been in several school plays with fairly good roles, and alot of community theatre. Im in the dance company at my school. This summer I’m doing an internship at the academy of performing arts working with the middle schoolers in the summer play there, and not to mention im really passionate.
I get pretty good grades, my most recent GPA was about a 3.6/3.7
Should i be getting better grades?
I just want to know how I can achieve this goal so any advice would be AWESOM!
yes, you should be getting better grades; this is one of the most competitive schools in the country, and 3.6’s and even 4.0’s are a dime a dozen- you need something more- an edge over all the other overachievers that apply every semester. if you havent done much work outside of school as far as acting, you may not make the cut; they look for a fairly accomplished actor when accepting students, and all applicants will be very passionate. and your most recent gpa is not what they look at- they look at youre gpa as a whole, and each individual semester from freshmen through senior year. you could have had a 2.5 one semester, and that would pretty much knock you out of the running, even if you got a 4.0 some other semester. your sats must be well above average as well. not only are you applying to a top school, youre applying to one of their most prestigious programs, so you must not only be one of the best students in your class (usually in the top 5 or 10%), but you also must have the skills and experience that the theater program requires. in short, you really havent given us much to go on grade-wise at all, so i couldnt even give you a good guess, but even if you did, only the admissions board knows what exactly they look for. theres no definitive way to get into any college- you just do the best you can, and you do that throughout high school- not just junior and senior year, as they look at everything.
