@121Bollox None of … @121Bollox None of the above actually. He made stuff and he’ll continue to make stuff his way no matter what anybody says so it’s pointless to have silly little arguments about his work. It’s my personal opinion when I call it utter garbage. I think his work is ugly, as unprofessional as that sounds, and that’s that. It’s just ugly.
@121Bollox HE … @121Bollox HE WANTED TO ‘FIT IN’! So designed, and commisioned sails on his roof! DAILY, local residents, would drive by and shoot at his home! He claimed that the ‘extra lead’ had increased the price of his property! Classic Frank Gehry
The man has the coviction or a Tiger, and the balls of an elephant! Young, up-and-coming architects… take note?
‘Over-rated architect’, maybe. Man of Principle… definitely!
Schools of Architecture, nowadays, TAKE NOTE!
@sansewai – Do you … @sansewai – Do you disagree through your ‘conditioned student years given as what is aesthetically accepted for the mass market’, or do you despise such a man, simply because he had the backing of Philip Johnson?
Gehry was ‘blinkered’ in his early approach, yet REBELLED AGAINST JOHNSON, a formidable Powerhouse, & a product of the Bauhaus.
I saw Gehry designing his first home, for his family. The neighbours had Yachts left proud standing in an area hundreds of miles away from the closest lake
He just makes … He just makes anything, puts it anywhere and waits for the praise of the people to fuel his master ego. He’s like Britney in music. No real architecture critic (if there are any left at all) will ever say his work is quality architecture. Even Bilbao isn’t good architecture. It’s architectural acupuncture of an old ugly industrial town which is great, but the architecture itself is nothing.
Good advice from an … Good advice from an overrated “architect”. The fact that you’re a starchitect today doesn’t make you a good architect. In the past they used to be great innovative thinkers that studied the climates they were building in and built with respect to the surrounding cultural/natural landscapes.
For the people who … For the people who dont know who AYND RAND was or is,she wrote “El Manantial”,which talks about the life of 2 architects…its a MASTERPIECE and this info is just for those who have guts… who seek for TRUTH during there lifetime.
I agree with Gehry … I agree with Gehry but I have reservations about advising anyone to worry about software. That’s later.
What any young arch student should do as much and as often as possible is touching a real live pencil, dragging it over real live paper and learning to LOVE drawing!
You will love architecture one way or another if you can develop a love for drawing. I’m an architect and it’s taken me 30 years to learn that the only true love of architecture is the love of art. Everything else is just work.
…this is true,in … …this is true,in the end the satisfaction is achieved when one is contented because that is what he/she wanted to become, and that is why hes doing everything his/her own way,..
Yes, I truly … Yes, I truly believe in his view. Architecture almost seems dictatorial in its teaching of the students. We can learn from the past certainly and architects must consider the social and environmental context and consequence of their intent in everyway possible because that is what architecture is essentially about, but you can’t tell a designer, a creator, how to solve a problem by laying out a sequential process like a math question.
That is truly a … That is truly a shame, a professor should never do that, although I must admit, those professors make GREAT reviewers. I had a review with someone like that, and he was very anal about why I did things certain ways, questioned EVERYTHING, practically told me what I “should” have done, but it really pushed the project further and helped solidify my ideas. Sometimes in defending your idea, you learn what it is really about… They don’t make good teachers, but boy do they make great critiques…
I’ve experience a … I’ve experience a lecturer who forced his designs on his student. He FORCED me to build his ideas and do his designs without supporting or helping me further develop my designs. Lecturers like these deserves a kick up their ass. I went on with my own design anyway. He gave me a C for it. Well, at least I’m proud to say that I designed it for me and not for him. Gehry’s right! Just Be Yourself. You’ve gotta learn to listen. But the decision is yours.
Just get more sleep … Just get more sleep, things will not seem so bad tomorrow. Trust ME! If you made it to 4th year you must have something about you. You passed the point of no return, just grit your teeth and go all out. Never look back.
I learned that the … I learned that the hard way back in my 3rd year. My studio lecturer was a preacher. I hated his work and resisted his thinking at almost every turn, my best work resulted from that. I think it’s possible to not like a building but still respect it for its architectural integrity. The Jewish Muesum for example, we are not supposed to like it, but it’s great design for what it is intended to be.
pqueolrac the … pqueolrac the process in which architecture is being teached in schools(mine also) is medieval because teachers(?) try to pass their ideas into the design of their students as you said! so do what you think is right to you, develop your own thinking about architecture and dont care if they try to limit you!thats what i do and trust me its much more interesting and creaetive than try to understand what the teacher wants you to do!
cheers!
