Given that many of the grants towards the arts have been cut in order to divert extra funds to the LONDON Olympics.
Can someone please tell me, or preferably show me, what benefit will be had by any community outside London.
Please dont answer by saying that sports events will be spread around the UK, we all know that some of the very minor events(such as no – hoper football teams, with minimal attendance) may be played at outlying football grounds.
What I want to know is, what financial benefit will the LONDON Olympics have for the rest of the country, how will it benefit the average "Joe" on the dole que in say Newcastle Upon Tyne?
What financial or leisure benefits are their in the leisure and sports facilities which are costing us all a fortune, for anyone outside travelling distance of London?
Is it not time to return the games to Athens Permanently?

my apologies, I did not realise tat we all had this craving to live in London.
As for the pleasure of watching the sport, well all I can say is that what you will be watching apparently is a bunch of steroid pumped athletes getting medals which they will return in the near future.
But hey, if that lights your candles then so be it!
Hi Richard
Yes wales was thrown a bone by the government to quell the screams for independance.
Sheffield already has an Olympic Pool so why build another one.
The olympic village of which you speak, will be turned into expensive flats for outsiders when the games are finished and the developers will walk away with a tidy profit at the expense of the British Tax payer

Speak up young man, even trolls like you are allowed an opinion
Give the Olympics a permanent home in Greece with every participating country paying towards its upkeep, costs and security. Rent it out for other competitions or rent the accommodation out to tourists and holidaymakers when it’s not being used.
Then we wouldn’t have these expensive campaigns every 4 years to see who could host the games, we wouldn’t have to have billions paid out by different countries building pools, stadiums, accommodation and venues. And if it was used for tourism in non-Olympic years, it would also help to pay for itself.
Of course we outside London benefit from the olympics – we get to watch it on the telly, & wish we lived somewhere that got as much attention as the capital city.
IT WAS SARCASM ! London gets everything, that’s my point. I was actually AGREEING with you.

the only benefit I see is that great British talent from around the country can participate on home soil and hopefully win some medals

Yes, give it back to Athens. We should always hold the world cup, and germany should always retain the arse slapping competitions….

Who’s idea was it to host the Olympics in the most expensive overpopulated city on earth, while were it at bearing in mind it will probably be the target for a terrorist attack. lets put it in the part of London the where the terrorists live. We don’t want them to have to travel to far.
Kamran – I admire your optimism bud, but me grans got a better chance of a gold than that shower.

well… Cardiff and South Wales is benefiting alot a $1.4billion international sports village is being built to be used by the olypmpics in Cardiff Bay and the Millienium Stadium is being used in several events, olypmpic swimming pool has been built for it. It will bring a massive boast to the Cardiff and WALES economy.

The whole London Olympics thing is a disgrace. Not only are grants being switched from better causes but there is every expectation that Londoners (and probably everyone else in the UK ) will be paying for it for years to come.
Yesterday, a lady who has breast cancer and was refused a drug was told that it is now too late and that she will die – all this so that overpaid professionals can run around in circles!

If the British government cared anything at all about anyone outside London they would have built the olympic stadium somewhere in the middle of the UK, near an airport and where all Brits could travel comfortably too. That of course would have to be Manchester. But at least is would be accessible to everyone.
I’m Scottish and at least Manchester would be fine as I’m 60 miles from Aberdeen airport and 53 miles from Inverness airport. It’s better and cheaper to go there and to find somewhere to stay than London.
It was the same with the Millinium Dome……to go there from the north you had to pay a fortune..so not really good for the whole nation.
And yes…i agree to having them put back to Athens. After all they were originated there.

And the worst part is… There will be thousands of foreigners reminding you of the importance of putting flouride in your water, brushing, flossing and seeing a dentist.
What will you sally Brits do when rest of the world smiles and shows you what teeth are supposed to look like. Maybe the government can invest in blinders for the general pop. I suppose your crap island will never shine so bright again…

Unfortunately, even London won’t benefit in the long term because of the massive debts that will have been run up.
I predict the final costs to be in the order of £15b to £20b – that’s if they complete construction on time!!
You saw it here first.

I agree, it is a waste of money and no real benefit to the majority of the population. I really don’t care who wins what. And what use is an olympic swimming pool after the olympics? As far as I know Wales is very limited with decent public "fun" pools. I do not know of one in South Wales. Something like that would be really beneficial to the public, years into the future.
It would be interesting to know exactly what boost it will bring to the welsh community after the event.

I like the idea of always staging the Olympics in Athens, but then I don’t live in Athens. It does seem to cost an awful lot of money to keep building these fantastic facilities all over the world, when if there were a permanent venue, the facilities could always be state of the art and we wouldn’t have the nail-biting moments of, will it be completed on time?
Now, who would finance the games if they were in Athens? You could hardly expect Greece to foot the bill every 4 years.
