Hello.
I’ve always been the type to get high grades, but my freshman year was spent at a highly competitive school that has been called the top in the state. My GPA bordered 85 and 89, unweighted [thanks to math.]
I took Spanish 1 and 2 as well as Algebra 1 and Geometry in middle school and will continue to take classes in mathematics and Spanish until I run out of courses to take within them–which in Spanish will happen after junior year. I’ve been published in local poetry anthologies and work as a staff member [hopefully an editor this year] of my school literary magazine.
I work a a regular volunteer and as a part of a volunteer group at my local library and am an assistant teacher at my sunday school. I am planning on creating a tutoring service for younger children wanting to learn Spanish or helping them in math, my two strongest areas.
I have been involved in theatre arts, volunteering at my community theatre, but have not found time to be in shows the past year. To compensate, I help out building sets for plays and am trying to work through the process of planning out a play to direct at a local school.
I will be doing 4 AP’s as a sophomore [Spanish Language, Evnvironmental Systems, US History, Computer Science]. All the rest of my classes are Pre-IB and Honors.
I’m also on the lacrosse team and will be entering the International Baccalaureate my junior year. [About to be a sophomore as I write this.]
By the end of summer I will be CPR, AED and Red Cross Certified.
If it matters, I’m Hispanic and also Muslim.

Hopefully I’ll be able to major in physics with a minor in Spanish literature or drama. I’m highly intent on studying premed in college as well, and I know Columbia has a fantastic premed program.
Columbia’s been my dream school as long as I can remember, but after this past year I’m worried that it might not become a reality. It definately was not an easy year and my grades just added insult to injury.
Do I still have a shot at getting in?
Do you have any advice for someone who’s interested in attending?
What are my chances at other schools [Cornell, NYU, Vassar, Brown specifically?]
Thanks!
Luz M.
