I live in a small town and one of my favorite places is the local community theatre. I have been in several plays and productions there and I find it to be place very near to my heart, as do many members of my community. The theatre building is also shared with a local symphony orchestra. Lately, money has been rough and the board of directors has decided that it can no longer fund the position of manager so the man who directs a good deal of the plays will not have a job there. The drama department will be essentially killed. I am looking for a way to save his position and the only thing I can think of is applying for a government grant of some sort. This is bigger than having a car wash or bake sale, I am looking for something that could help sustain the manager’s position long enough for a sustainable solution to be created. Does anybody know of a ANY government arts grants, other sources of free money, or other solution ideas at all that could be used by the theatre? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Grants are a good idea, perhaps from the NEA or stimulus funds. IT will take a long time and you need to find someone who is expereienced in grant writing, Surely someone int he symphony has that experience, how else can they exisit? In the mean time. Many community theatres do not have any paid positions and have people who volunteer to direct. The organization of your current theatre must include a board of directors who can put their heads together and come up with a way to keep going.
