Planning a move… We are in our early 40′s and will be empty nesting soon. Love Raleigh and will eventually enlist the help of a real estate agent, but hope someone can steer us in the right direction. Looking for a small (2BR,2Bath) apartment or condo near downtown or right in downtown. We love the theatre and arts, parks, shopping, college community. But we are on a budget too. Can anyone suggest some areas to look (or areas to stay clear of)? Really want a city lifestyle – no yards, walking to most places, etc. Anything like that in Raleigh?
The downtown area of Raleigh has a lot more housing options than it did just a decade ago, so getting a "city lifestyle" is definitely possible. Alot will depend on your budget, of course, but hopefully you can benefit from the housing costs being down lately. Plus a couple of new condo buildings have just opened up downtown in the last year, as well as a new apartment building, all adding even more units. Add townhomes and single-family houses in the neighborhoods surrounding downtown and you’ve got a good supply going.
I think as empty nesters looking for a good area with entertainment, shopping and dining options, you will definitely enjoy being in downtown area.
Both downtownraleigh.com and downtownraleigh.org have pages listing housing options such as condos and townhomes. Craigslist often advertises a good few units as well as the locally-run Independent Weekly magazine. The Glenwood Agency is widely-known as the realtor that specializes in the downtown area, although there are certainly others that could help.

There’s lots to do in Raleigh. It’s a very desirable part of North Carolina to live in. You are a few hours drive to the beaches, a few hours drive to the mountains, Lots of parks and recreation around. If you are looking for an urban setting for your apartment I would recommend Glenwood South district near Downtown. There are a lot of new urban living residences around with shops and restaurants along Glenwood Avenue. Mellow Mushroom up the street from there. Wake Tech Community College is the area’s main Jr. College which is South of Raleigh. Rob1977nc above me has the best resources. You get a thumbup Rob. Near NCSU there’s more low costing apartments. They seem more ideal for a younger crowd who are more of my age.(I’m 25) They can also be enjoyable for any age. But it’s more like Cary over there and more suburban looking. North Raleigh is also very suburban looking. In your case, I would recommend Glenwood South. You can also ride the CAT bus to the mall, downtown, to more shopping, etc.
It’s a little hard to find something to steer clear of in Raleigh. The crime is not really a major problem. But I would steer clear of SE Raleigh around Poole Road and MLK blvd.
